Chlorella is a type of green algae that grows in fresh water. It’s available in tablet form but also as liquid extract or powder that you can add to juices and smoothies. It contains plenty of chlorophyll (plant protein) as well as vitamins, minerals (including absorbable iron, so it’s ideal for vegans) and amino acids. I’ve found it to be very good for overall skin health. Not everyone, though, can tolerate chlorella so do check with your doctor if you have a chronic medical condition.

Spirulina is also a freshwater algae. It’s a rich source of protein and is packed with vitamins B and E, minerals such as calcium and iron, and chlorophyll. It has a slightly milder taste than chlorella so it’s easier to take in a breakfast juice or smoothie. Rich in plant protein, spirulina is every vegan’s best friend.
